About this piece
The stacks in Monet's best-known series stood fifteen to twenty feet tall just outside his farmhouse at Giverny, and he painted them at several easels at once as the light changed. In May 1891 he hung fifteen canvases from the series together at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris, an exhibition that marked a breakthrough in his career. The Art Institute of Chicago holds the largest group of these paintings in the world, and this print is made from its open-access file.
