About this piece
A woman steadies a child on her lap and holds the small foot in a washbasin, seen from a steep angle that flattens the room into pattern. Cassatt, the only American invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists, took these cropped forms and bold outlines from her study of Japanese woodblock prints. The Art Institute of Chicago bought the painting in 1910, the first work by Cassatt to enter its collection, and this print is made from its open-access file.
