About this piece
Renoir painted this pair on the terrace of the Restaurant Fournaise at Chatou, a village on the Seine, and showed it at the Impressionist exhibition of 1882. Despite the title, the two were not sisters but unrelated models, their faces painted in fine, controlled strokes against a looser backdrop of river, boats and blossoming trees. This reproduction is made from the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access file.
