About this piece

Hiroshige filled the foreground of this print with the most famous tree in Edo (now Tokyo), a plum said to resemble a sleeping dragon, with visitors gathered behind a fence beyond it. Its bold composition and reddish sky make it one of his most recognizable designs, and Vincent van Gogh copied it in 1887 as Flowering Plum Orchard (After Hiroshige). Our print is made from the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access scan.
