About this piece

From Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, the series Hokusai made when he was over seventy, this design shows the mountain under clear skies at its summit with a thunderstorm at its foot. The smooth slopes of the volcano against the jagged lightning below give it great simplicity and force. Our print uses the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access scan, reproduced uncropped.
