About this piece

Van Gogh painted this stretch of the Seine at the Clichy Bridge, near Asnières just north of Paris, where he worked several times alongside Paul Signac. The small strokes of pure, brilliant color, set side by side to catch the light on water and leaves, show what he learned from Signac and Seurat during his two years in Paris. This reproduction is made from the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access file.
