About this piece

Van Gogh made at least twenty-four self-portraits during his two years in Paris, and this early one is painted on prepared artist's board rather than canvas. Its dense, dabbed brushwork is his response to Seurat's pointillism in A Sunday on La Grande Jatte, turned from a cool method into an intense, personal one. This reproduction is made from the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access file.
