About this piece

Augustine Roulin holds the rope of a cradle; the title means "the lullaby", and Van Gogh described the palette as a soothing "lullaby in colors". He painted five versions, finishing this one in January 1889, and in May of that year gave this canvas to Paul Gauguin as a gesture of reconciliation and friendship. This reproduction is made from the Art Institute of Chicago's open-access file.
